Peeping Tourist Museum

About

Peeping Tourist Museum in Durrës is one of the city’s most playful and unconventional cultural stops, a small museum dedicated to the quirks of early tourism along Albania’s coast. Set inside a restored historic house, it blends humour, nostalgia, and social commentary, offering a light‑hearted look at how visitors once experienced Durrës—from beach fashions to seaside habits and the rise of mass tourism in the 20th century. Inside, the most memorable section is the display of vintage beach culture: old swimsuits, sun hats, postcards, and photographs showing how locals and tourists posed, relaxed, and played by the sea. The museum’s name comes from its cheeky theme—many exhibits explore the idea of “being watched” or “watching others,” a humorous nod to the social dynamics of crowded beaches. Another highlight is the collection of retro tourism objects such as binoculars, cameras, guidebooks, and souvenirs that reveal how travel habits evolved. Playful installations recreate scenes from old hotels, beach cabins, and promenades, inviting visitors to step into the past. The museum also features satirical artworks that comment on tourism’s impact on identity, behaviour, and the city’s transformation.

Location

Peeping Tourist is a small private museum but one of the most interesting places in Durrës if you want to understand Albania's communist past. You will find it at Rruga Mustafa Varoshi, Durrës, right in the historical center of the city. It was opened by two professors from the local university and it is set in a house that feels like stepping back in time, full of objects, photos and stories about how tourism and daily life looked during the communist years. Because it is in the old center, you are surrounded by ancient sites. Right next door are the Byzantine Forum and the Roman Baths, with their old columns and ruins. A few minutes walk away you have the Durrës Amphitheatre, which is the biggest attraction in town, plus the Archaeological Museum on Rruga Taulantia. Close by you also have the Ethnographic Museum in the Aleksandër Moisiu House, the Fatih Mosque, the Venetian Tower and the old city walls. The Vollga seafront promenade is also just a short stroll away for a coffee after your visit.
