Venetian Tower of Durrës is one of the city’s most iconic coastal landmarks, a stout circular fortification that once guarded the entrance to the ancient harbour. Built in the early 15th century during Venetian rule, it formed part of a larger defensive system designed to protect Durrës from Ottoman expansion. Its thick walls—over three metres wide in some sections—show how seriously the Venetians took the city’s strategic importance. One of the most interesting facts is that the tower was originally connected to the city walls and the harbour gate, functioning as both lookout and artillery post. Its rounded shape was a deliberate innovation: curved walls better deflected cannon fire, a cutting‑edge military idea at the time. Inside, visitors can explore the upper platform, where soldiers once monitored the coastline and signalled approaching ships. The interior chamber is atmospheric, with stone masonry and narrow openings that served as embrasures for early firearms. Though simple, the space conveys the tower’s original purpose—endurance, vigilance, and control over the harbour.

The Venetian Tower of Durrës is one of the symbols of the city and you will find it right at the entrance to the old town. It is located at Rruga Anastas Durrsaku, Durrës, also listed as Bulevardi Epidamn. It is part of the old Durrës Castle walls that were built by the Byzantines and later strengthened by the Venetians, which is where the name comes from. Today it houses a small heritage center where you can learn about the history of the town. Since it stands on the edge of the historic center, everything is close. Just a few minutes walk inside the walls you have the Durrës Amphitheatre, the biggest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans and the main attraction of the city. Nearby you also have the Archaeological Museum on Rruga Taulantia, the largest in Albania, plus the Byzantine Forum, the Roman Baths, the Ethnographic Museum in the Aleksandër Moisiu House and the small Peeping Tourist Museum. The Vollga seafront promenade with cafes and restaurants starts right there, so you can combine a bit of history with a walk by the sea.
