Xhamia e Madhe

About

Xhamia e Madhe in Durrës is one of the city’s most prominent religious landmarks, a mosque that reflects both Ottoman heritage and the modern revival of Islamic life along the Albanian coast. Originally built in the 1930s and later reconstructed after decades of suppression, it stands today as a symbol of continuity and renewal in the heart of the city. Inside, the prayer hall is spacious and filled with natural light. The mihrab, carved with elegant geometric motifs, marks the direction of Mecca, while the minbar rises beside it, used for Friday sermons. The interior decoration blends simplicity with tradition: soft colours, Qur’anic calligraphy, and patterned carpets create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. One of the most interesting facts is the mosque’s role during the communist era. Although religious practice was banned, the building survived—partly because of its central location—and later became one of the first mosques to reopen after the 1990s, making it a key symbol of spiritual restoration in Durrës.

Location

Xhamia e Madhe Durrës, also known as the Great Mosque of Durrës, is right in the heart of the city center. You will find it at Rruga Aleksander Goga, Durrës. It was built in 1931 on the site of an older Ottoman mosque and it is the main mosque of the city today. It stands on the main square area with its nice fountains, so it is hard to miss while walking around. Because it is so central, you have a lot to see around it. Just a few steps away are the Byzantine Forum and the Roman Baths with their old columns and ruins. The Durrës Amphitheatre is also very close, which is the biggest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans and the top attraction in town. Close by you have the Archaeological Museum on Rruga Taulantia, the largest in Albania, the Ethnographic Museum in the Aleksandër Moisiu House, and the small Peeping Tourist Museum that shows life during communism. The Venetian Tower and the old city walls are also within walking distance, and the Vollga seafront promenade with its cafes and restaurants starts right there.
