Cathedral of St Paul and St Asti

About

Cathedral of St Paul and St Asti in Durrës is one of Albania’s youngest major churches, yet it stands on a site layered with centuries of faith. Completed in 2002, it replaced earlier religious buildings lost to conflict and regime change, becoming a symbol of renewal for the city’s Catholic community. Its modern façade is simple, but the interior reveals a surprising richness: warm stone, clean architectural lines, and a bright nave designed to amplify natural light. Inside, visitors can see a striking mosaic dedicated to St Paul, who is believed to have passed through ancient Dyrrachium on his missionary journeys. The cathedral also houses artworks by contemporary Albanian artists, blending traditional Christian iconography with modern styles. A notable feature is the chapel of St Asti, the city’s early Christian martyr, whose story connects Durrës to the earliest centuries of the Church. The cathedral frequently hosts concerts thanks to its excellent acoustics, making it not only a place of worship but also a cultural venue.

The Cathedral of St Paul and St Asti sits right in the heart of Durrës, Albania, in the third district near the historic centre and the busy port. You’ll find it along Rruga Egnatia, close to the corner with Rruga Imzot Fan S. Noli, not far from the main square known as Sheshi Liria. Just a short stroll away stands the Venetian Tower, a solid reminder of the city’s medieval defences, and the remains of the Durrës Castle walls that still circle parts of the centre. A few minutes further brings you to the impressive Roman Amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Balkans, where you can still sense the scale of ancient Dyrrachium. Nearby you’ll also come across the Fatih Mosque, a quiet Ottoman-era landmark, and the Archaeological Museum that holds finds from the city’s long past. The waterfront promenade and the port itself are close enough for a pleasant walk if you fancy sea views after visiting the church. Everything is compact, so you can take it at an easy pace without rushing.
