Rotušės aikštė, or Town Hall Square, is one of the oldest and most historically significant public spaces in Vilnius. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this triangular square has served as a central hub for trade, celebrations, and civic life since the Middle Ages. Once the city’s main marketplace, it was surrounded by merchant houses and guild halls, with the Vilnius Town Hall—first mentioned in 1432—standing as its focal point. Over the centuries, the square has witnessed royal visits, public announcements, and even executions. Today, it remains a vibrant cultural venue, hosting festivals, concerts, and seasonal fairs. The neoclassical Town Hall, redesigned by Laurynas Gucevičius in the 18th century, now functions as a cultural centre and event space. In recent years, the square has embraced modernity with installations like the interactive “Portal,” connecting Vilnius to other cities in real time.
