Belgrade Drama Theatre (Beogradsko dramsko pozorište), founded in 1947, is one of the city’s oldest and most respected theatrical institutions. Originally established as the City Theatre, it quickly gained prominence with its debut performance of Boris Gorbatov’s “Youth of Our Fathers” in 1948. Located in the Crveni Krst neighborhood, the theatre became known for its bold repertoire, especially during its golden era in the 1950s and 60s, when it staged acclaimed productions of modern American and European classics. From 1959 to 1975, it operated as part of the Contemporary Theatre before regaining its original name. A major renovation in 2003 modernized its facilities while preserving its artistic legacy. With a seating capacity of 495, the theatre continues to present a dynamic mix of classical and avant-garde works, maintaining a strong ensemble and a distinctive artistic voice. Today, it remains a vital part of Belgrade’s cultural landscape, celebrated for its innovation and enduring commitment to dramatic excellence.
