Founded in 1895, the Museum of Natural History in Belgrade is Serbia’s oldest institution dedicated to the study and preservation of natural heritage. With over 1.5 million specimens across 125 collections, it ranks among the most significant museums in Southeastern Europe. Its holdings span minerals, fossils, plants, fungi, and animals from Serbia, the Balkans, and beyond, offering a comprehensive view of biodiversity and geological history. Though it lacks a permanent exhibition space, the museum organizes rotating displays and educational programs at its gallery in Kalemegdan. Highlights include rare Balkan flora documented by Josif Pančić, the museum’s founding figure, and extensive entomological and paleontological collections. Housed in two buildings in the Vračar district, the museum also maintains one of the region’s richest scientific libraries. It continues to serve as a vital center for research, conservation, and public engagement, bridging science and culture in the heart of Belgrade.
Belgrade Serbia
The Museum of Natural History in Belgrade is currently located at Njegoševa 51, housed in the building of the former First Female Grammar School. Founded in 1895, it is one of Serbia’s oldest and most significant institutions, dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of Serbia and the broader Balkan region. The museum’s collections include minerals, fossils, plant and animal specimens, and an extensive herbarium, with exhibits that cover natural history from ancient times to the present. While it does not have a permanent exhibition, various temporary exhibits are held in the Natural History Museum Gallery located within the historic Belgrade Fortress area. This gallery is set in one of the oldest buildings on the fortress grounds, close to Knez Mihailova Street, Republic Square, and Kalemegdan Park, all offering a rich cultural experience in the heart of the city. The museum’s location combines natural science with access to some of Belgrade’s most iconic historic and leisure sites.
