About

The Belgrade Observatory, founded in 1887, is Serbia’s oldest scientific institution dedicated to astronomy and astrophysics. Nestled in the Zvezdara Forest on one of Belgrade’s highest points, the observatory combines historical architecture with active research facilities. It houses a renowned library with over 5,000 books and 100,000 periodicals, making it the most comprehensive astronomical archive in the country. The observatory conducts advanced research in stellar systems, spectroscopy, and planetary science, and is affiliated with international academic programs such as the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Astrophysics. It also operates the Astronomical Station Vidojevica near Prokuplje, offering remote observation capabilities. Governed by a director and steering committee, and funded by Serbia’s Ministry of Science, the observatory remains a vital center for scientific inquiry and public education. Guided tours are available monthly, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the evolution of astronomy and its role in Serbian scientific heritage.

Belgrade Observatory is perched in the tranquil Zvezdara Forest at Volgina 7, in the eastern part of Belgrade. Established in 1887, this renowned institution is set atop the city’s highest point and features a striking modernist architectural complex surrounded by lush woods.
