Galerija Equrna, founded in 1982, is one of Ljubljana’s most established contemporary art galleries. Originally formed as an association of freelance artists, it became the first private gallery in the former Yugoslavia and remains a vital force in Slovenia’s art scene. Located in a historic 18th-century building near the Ljubljanica River, Equrna presents monthly exhibitions that highlight mid-career and emerging Slovenian artists. With a strong curatorial focus on postmodern and contemporary visual art, the gallery has hosted over 400 exhibitions both locally and internationally. Equrna is also known for its participation in global art fairs, reinforcing its role as a bridge between Slovenian creativity and the wider art world.

Galerija Equrna is located at Gregorčičeva 3 in the center of Ljubljana. The gallery occupies a renovated early 18th-century courtyard building with vaulted spaces and high ceilings, originally used around 1809 as stables for Napoleon’s army. Since its establishment in 1982 as the first private gallery in Yugoslavia, it has become a key venue presenting modern and contemporary Slovenian art, featuring mostly solo and some group exhibitions that highlight important mid-generation and younger artists. Nearby, visitors can easily explore Ljubljana’s central area, which includes many cultural and historical landmarks, cafés, boutiques, and the lively riverbanks of the Ljubljanica River just a short walk away.
