Rožnik is a 391-meter wooded hill rising from Tivoli Park, cherished by Ljubljana locals as a peaceful retreat and recreational haven. Its two peaks—Cankarjev vrh and Šišenski hrib—are crisscrossed by walking trails, including the Jesenko Trail, which highlights 30 native tree species. At the summit stands the Church of the Visitation, redesigned in the 18th century, and the Pri Matiji inn, once home to Slovenia’s greatest writer, Ivan Cankar. A memorial room and monument honour his legacy. Rožnik’s layered history includes use as a refuge during epidemics and as the site of a medieval leprosarium. Today, it hosts cultural events like May Day bonfires and the Kresnik Award ceremony, blending nature, heritage, and community spirit.

Rožnik Hill is a 391-meter-high wooded hill located northwest of Ljubljana’s city center, forming part of the Tivoli–Rožnik Hill Landscape Park along with Tivoli City Park and Šiška Hill. The hill features two notable peaks: Šiška Hill (429 m) and Cankar Peak (394 m), named after the famed Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar who lived at an inn on the hill. On the summit of Cankar Peak stands the Baroque Visitation Church and the Pri Matiji Inn, a historic site now hosting the Ivan Cankar Memorial Room. Rožnik has been a popular walking, hiking, and recreational destination since the 19th century, cherished for its natural beauty and peaceful forested paths. Nearby, on the southern slope of Rožnik Hill, lies the Ljubljana Zoo, providing an additional attraction. The hill’s extensive network of footpaths, including the Jesenko Trail that highlights local tree species, makes it a favored spot for outdoor activities and nature walks. Being an extension of Tivoli Park, Rožnik Hill is easily accessible from the city center and offers a serene natural escape close to urban Ljubljana, blending cultural heritage, historic landmarks, and lush green spaces in a picturesque setting. This makes Rožnik a key spot for hiking and relaxation just minutes from central Ljubljana.
