About

Established in 1921, Šentjakobsko Theatre (Šentjakobsko gledališče) is one of Ljubljana’s oldest cultural institutions and a cornerstone of Slovenia’s amateur theatre tradition. Originally a semi-professional venue, it transitioned in the 1960s into a vibrant amateur theatre, nurturing generations of actors, directors, and technicians—many of whom went on to professional careers. Located at Krekov trg, the theatre shares its historic venue with the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and underwent a major renovation in 2020 to modernize its facilities. Today, Šentjakobsko Theatre stages a diverse repertoire of comedies, dramas, and musicals, producing around five plays annually and touring across Slovenia and abroad.

Location

Sentjakobsko Theatre (Šentjakobsko gledališče Ljubljana) is located at Krekov trg 2, right at the base of Ljubljana Castle in the central Mestni dom building, just below Castle Hill and adjacent to the funicular railway that takes visitors up to the castle. The entrance is on the side of the building, near the pedestrian tunnel under the castle. This lively cultural hub shares its location with the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, creating a vibrant space for families and theatre lovers. Nearby, visitors can easily explore historic attractions such as the famous Ljubljana Castle, the colourful Central Market, the renowned Triple Bridge, and the picturesque Ljubljanica River. The area is dotted with inviting cafés, local restaurants, and offers quick public transport connections, as well as easy access to lively city squares and museums, making Sentjakobsko Theatre a prime spot for cultural outings in the heart of Ljubljana.
