About

Founded in 1884 by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters is housed in a grand neo-Renaissance palace designed by Franz Schmidt on Zrinski Square. Its core collection, assembled by the bishop between the 1860s and 1880s, features European paintings from the 15th to 19th centuries, including works by Beato Angelico, Vittore Carpaccio, El Greco, Jacob van Ruisdael, and other notable masters. Today the gallery holds around 4,000 works, with some 250 on display, offering a rich survey of Italian Renaissance, Northern European, and Baroque art. The setting itself is part of the experience, with elegant interiors that frame the paintings in a scholarly yet welcoming atmosphere. In the courtyard, visitors can also see the Baška Tablet, the oldest known monument inscribed in Glagolitic script, dating to 1102. As part of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the gallery remains a cultural landmark, preserving and presenting masterpieces that illuminate centuries of European artistic achievement.
