Tkalčićeva Street

Tkalčićeva Street
About

Tkalčićeva Street is one of Zagreb’s most vibrant and beloved pedestrian zones, stretching from Ban Jelačić Square northward through the historic Upper Town. Once the site of the Medveščak stream, which divided the medieval settlements of Gradec and Kaptol, the area was transformed into a bustling street in the late 19th century. Today, Tkalčićeva—affectionately known as “Tkalča” by locals—is a lively hub of cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. Its colorful facades and cobbled path invite leisurely strolls, while its outdoor terraces buzz with conversation from morning coffee to late-night drinks. The street’s layered history includes a stint as one of Europe’s earliest red-light districts, adding a touch of intrigue to its past. Statues like that of writer Marija Jurić Zagorka and a historic sundial mark its cultural significance. Whether you're people-watching, enjoying local cuisine, or exploring Zagreb’s café culture, Tkalčićeva Street offers an irresistible blend of charm, history, and everyday life in the Croatian capital.
