Founded in 1953 and renamed in honour of its visionary founder Dr. Branko Gavella in 1992, the Gavella Drama Theatre is one of Zagreb’s most dynamic stages for contemporary and classic drama. Located on Frankopanska Street, it emerged from a desire to offer a fresh, innovative alternative to traditional theatre, embracing diverse genres and bold interpretations. Over the decades, its ensemble has premiered more than 400 productions, many enjoying long runs and critical acclaim at home and abroad. The theatre is renowned for its “collective acting” ethos, fostering deep ensemble synergy, and for hosting the annual Gavella Evenings festival, a showcase of the finest Croatian productions alongside notable regional works.
