Ribnjak Park is a peaceful green retreat nestled just behind Zagreb Cathedral, offering a quiet escape in the heart of the city. Originally part of the medieval city fortifications, the park was redesigned in 1830 by Bishop Aleksandar Alagović and architect Leopold Klingspogle. Its name, meaning “fishpond,” recalls the ponds that once dotted the area until the late 19th century. Today, Ribnjak spans over 4.6 hectares and features shaded paths, lawns, and a children’s playground, making it a favorite for families, joggers, and dog walkers. The park is also home to the Youth Center Ribnjak and the Purgeraj club, adding a cultural dimension to its tranquil setting. Despite its central location, Ribnjak remains relatively uncrowded and is cherished for its natural beauty and historical roots. With its blend of greenery, heritage, and community life, Ribnjak Park offers a refreshing pause from Zagreb’s urban rhythm just steps from Ban Jelačić Square.
Zagreb Croatia
Ribnjak Park is located directly behind Zagreb Cathedral, stretching along the east walls of Kaptol in the Gornji Grad–Medveščak district, just a five-minute walk from Ban Jelačić Square in the city center. The park occupies the western side of Ribnjak Street and was originally designed in 1830 as an English-style garden on the site of former bishopric fishponds, from which it gets its name. Today, Ribnjak Park covers nearly 40,000 square meters and features monuments, mature trees, and landscaped paths, offering a peaceful green space in the heart of Zagreb. Nearby, you’ll find Zagreb Cathedral, the Youth Center Ribnjak, the Purgeraj club, and the Sports and Recreation Center Šalata. The park is also close to Josip Lang Square and is surrounded by historic streets and city fortifications. Ribnjak Park is easily accessible by tram and bus, making it a convenient spot for both locals and visitors to relax or explore the city’s historic core.
