The Flandernbunker in Kiel is located on the northern end of Hindenburgufer in the Wik district near the naval port Tirpitzhafen. Built during 1943-1944, this high-rise naval bunker features walls 2.5 meters thick and ceilings up to 4 meters thick, designed to shelter up to 750 people including submariners, radio operators, and later civilians during heavy air raids in World War II. It housed a naval communications center and coordinated defense operations for the Kiel naval port and Baltic region. After the war, it was decommissioned with large openings blown into its structure to make it unusable militarily. Today, preserved largely in its ruined state as a listed building, the bunker serves as a museum, memorial, and educational site promoting peace and illustrating the horrors of war. The surrounding area offers views of the Kiel Fjord and access to historical naval sites, making it an important cultural and historic landmark.
