Vieburger Gehölz is one of Kiel’s largest and most diverse woodland areas, offering a natural retreat on the city’s eastern side. Known for its rich biodiversity, the forest combines old oak and beech groves with meadows and streams, creating habitats for birds, deer, and small wildlife. Its extensive network of trails makes it a favorite destination for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, while seasonal changes bring new colors and moods to the landscape. Historically valued as a community green space, Vieburger Gehölz continues to serve as a vital link between urban life and nature, inviting visitors to explore, relax, and reconnect with the environment. With its blend of ecological importance and recreational charm, it remains a cornerstone of Kiel’s natural heritage.
Kiel Germany
Vieburger Gehölz is a nearly 70-hectare ancient forest located in the Kiel districts of Gaarden-Süd and Kronsburg, situated on the Hornheimer Riegel end moraine. The northern part of the forest serves as a dog off-leash area and is notable for containing the Kiel Transmission Tower at its edge. The forest historically belonged to the large Isarnho (Iron Forest) that extended from the Schlei to Kiel and beyond. It is a popular local retreat offering dense woodland, open spaces, and a natural setting with walking trails and some wetland areas. Access to the forest is available from various paths such as Hornheimer Weg, Krusenrotter Weg, and Petersburger Weg, with nearby parking on Neue Hamburger Straße. The Vieburger Gehölz stands as an important green space closely linked with Kiel’s history, including events like the Kiel sailor’s uprising in 1918. Surrounding areas include residential neighborhoods and recreational facilities, making it a significant natural oasis near the city.
