Kieler Schloss

About

The Kieler Schloss is one of the city’s most significant landmarks, blending centuries of history with modern cultural life. Originally built in the 13th century as a residence for the dukes of Holstein, the castle has undergone many transformations, from medieval fortress to Renaissance palace and later a baroque residence. Severely damaged during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in the 1960s with a striking modern extension that now serves as a concert and event venue. Today, the Kieler Schloss is home to the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and numerous cultural programs, making it a vibrant hub for music, theatre, and exhibitions. Its location overlooking the fjord adds to its charm, offering visitors both historical insight and contemporary experiences. The castle remains a symbol of Kiel’s resilience and its enduring role as a center of culture in northern Germany.
