St. Nikolai Church is Kiel’s oldest surviving building and a defining landmark of the city. Originally founded in the 13th century, the Gothic brick church stands proudly on the Alter Markt, symbolizing Kiel’s medieval origins and its enduring faith. Its striking architecture features soaring vaults, pointed arches, and a richly decorated interior that reflects centuries of craftsmanship. The church was heavily damaged during the Second World War but carefully rebuilt, preserving its historic character while incorporating modern elements. Today, St. Nikolai serves both as a place of worship and a cultural venue, hosting concerts and community events that connect past and present. The bronze sculpture “Der Geistkämpfer” by Ernst Barlach, placed in front of the church, adds a powerful artistic dimension, making St. Nikolai not only a spiritual center but also a cultural icon of Kiel.
