The Opernhaus Kiel is the city’s grand opera house and a cultural beacon on the Baltic coast. Built in 1907 in striking neo-baroque style, it survived wartime destruction and was carefully restored to retain its historic character while embracing modern stage technology. Today, the opera house hosts a diverse program of opera, ballet, concerts, and theatre, making it one of northern Germany’s leading venues for the performing arts. Its richly decorated auditorium and impressive façade reflect Kiel’s artistic ambition at the start of the 20th century, while its innovative productions continue to attract audiences from across the region. The Opernhaus is not only a place for world-class performances but also a symbol of resilience and cultural pride, standing as a testament to Kiel’s enduring commitment to the arts.

Opernhaus Kiel is located at Rathausplatz 4 in the very heart of Kiel’s inner city, right beside the distinctive tower of Kiel City Hall and close to the small Rathausplatz park that opens towards the pedestrian zone. From here it is only a short walk to Holstenstraße shopping street, the Alter Markt, and the waterfront around Kiel Fjord with its promenades, piers, and boat connections, as well as nearby cultural venues such as the Kieler Schloss, Stadt- und Schifffahrtsmuseum, and various cafés, restaurants, and bars clustered in the surrounding streets.​
