Church of Saint Mary 'Antica'
Santa Maria Antica is one of Verona’s most atmospheric Romanesque churches, standing beside the celebrated Scaliger Tombs in the heart of the historic centre. Originally built in the 7th century, it was destroyed by the 1117 earthquake and rebuilt in 1185 in the pure, essential lines of Romanesque architecture. The church became the private chapel of the powerful Scaligeri family, whose Gothic funerary monuments rise dramatically just outside its entrance.
