Church of Saint Zeno
The Church of Saint Zeno, known as the Basilica di San Zeno, is one of Verona’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture, admired for its warm tufa‑and‑brick façade and its harmonious proportions. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries over the tomb of Saint Zeno, the city’s beloved patron, it stands at the heart of the historic San Zeno district. The façade is framed by a 12th‑century bell tower and the tower of the former monastery, while the bronze doors and sculpted porch by the master Nicholaus showcase exceptional medieval craftsmanship. Inside, the basilica reveals a serene three‑aisled interior, enriched by frescoes from the 13th to 15th centuries and the celebrated Mantegna altarpiece, a masterpiece of early Renaissance art. The crypt, traditionally linked to the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, adds a layer of legend to this deeply atmospheric site. San Zeno remains one of Verona’s most evocative sacred spaces, blending history, devotion and artistic splendour.
