Piazza delle Erbe is the oldest and most atmospheric square in Verona, built on the site of the ancient Roman forum. Over the centuries it became the city’s commercial and political heart, a role still reflected in its lively market stalls and surrounding monuments. The square is framed by some of Verona’s most distinctive buildings: the frescoed Mazzanti Houses, the medieval Casa dei Giudici, the ancient town hall, and the soaring Torre dei LambertiWikipedia. At its western end stands Palazzo Maffei, a Baroque palace crowned with statues of Greek gods, facing the marble column topped by the Lion of St. Mark, symbol of Venetian rule. Piazza delle Erbe occupies the vibrant core of Verona’s historic center, originally the site of the Roman Forum and now a lively market square surrounded by frescoed palaces. It lies just northeast of Piazza Bra and the Arena di Verona, connected by the bustling Corso Porta Borsari with its ancient Roman gate. Dominated by the soaring Torre dei Lamberti to the north, the elegant Baroque Palazzo Maffei to the west, and the adjacent Piazza dei Signori with its grand statues and Loggia del Consiglio, the square seamlessly links to Juliet’s House and the Torre del Gardello within easy strolling distance.
