Palazzo del Podestà
Palazzo del Podestà, also known as Cangrande’s Palace or the Government Palace, is one of the most historically layered buildings in Verona. Built by the Scaligeri in the 13th–14th centuries, it stands between Piazza dei Signori and the Arche Scaligere, forming part of the city’s medieval power centre. During Venetian rule it served as the seat of the Podestà, the highest civic authority, and later became the residence of provincial governors. The palace is arranged around a rectangular courtyard with double arcades, once richly decorated with frescoes by Jacopo Avanzi and Altichieri, two of the greatest Veronese painters of the 1300s.
