Castello Visconteo
Castello Visconteo once dominated the summit of Colle San Pietro, a powerful fortress built in 1398 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti on the remains of an earlier medieval stronghold. Intended to secure Verona during the Visconti rule, it formed part of a wider defensive system overlooking the Adige and the Roman Theatre. The castle stood for just over four centuries before being destroyed in 1801 by Napoleonic troops, who demolished much of the structure for strategic reasons. Although the Austrians later cleared the remaining ruins to build the 19th‑century barracks now known as Castel San Pietro, long stretches of the original Visconti walls still survive on the hillsideinternoverde.it.
