The Museo delle Navi Antiche di Pisa is one of Italy’s most extraordinary archaeological museums, housed inside the historic Medici Arsenals along the Lungarno. Its creation followed a remarkable 1998 discovery near Pisa San Rossore station, where the remains of dozens of Roman and early medieval ships emerged from the soil, many astonishingly well preservedVISITA PISA. Today the museum displays seven ancient vessels—four nearly intact—alongside hundreds of artefacts that illuminate a millennium of maritime life, trade routes, shipbuilding techniques, and dramatic shipwrecks. Spread across vast restored halls, the exhibition guides visitors through eight thematic sections that reconstruct the world of ancient sailors, from cargo and navigation tools to daily life on boardWikipedia. The museum sits near the restored Torre Guelfa and the Old Citadel complex, a short walk from Pisa San Rossore railway station and within easy reach of the Leaning Tower area. Just across the river stands the Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina, while the medieval streets of the historic center, including Piazza dei Cavalieri and numerous palaces lining the lungarni, are also close by.
