Giardino Scotto is one of Pisa’s most atmospheric green spaces, set within the historic fortress known as the Cittadella Nuova. The area has undergone many transformations over the centuries: archaeological findings show activity here as early as the Roman era. In the 15th century, the Florentines built a fortress on this site, with contributions attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi. After periods of destruction and rebuilding, the property was acquired in 1798 by Domenico Scotto, whose name the garden still carries. In the 19th century, architect Giovanni Caluri redesigned the grounds into an elegant garden, later opened to the public in 1939Visit Tuscany. Today, Giardino Scotto offers a peaceful retreat with lawns, shaded paths, and summer events, blending centuries of military history with the charm of a modern urban park.

Giardino Scotto, also known as Scotto Garden, is a historic park located on Lungarno Leonardo Fibonacci on the south bank of the River Arno, a short walk west of Pisa’s medieval core in Tuscany, Italy. It occupies the grounds and bastions of the former Cittadella Nuova fortress, forming a green gateway between the riverfront and the surrounding residential streets. Nearby are Corso Italia and Piazza XX Settembre with their shops and cafés, the riverside Lungarni promenades, Ponte della Fortezza bridge, and easy pedestrian routes towards Pisa Centrale station and the main historic sights such as Piazza dei Miracoli.
