Chiesa di San Michele degli Scalzi is one of Pisa’s most atmospheric Romanesque churches, standing in the eastern part of the city near the Arno. First recorded in 1025, it was rebuilt between 1152 and 1171 for the Pulsanese Benedictines, the “barefoot monks” who gave the church its name. Its façade, divided into two levels, combines marble arcades, Corinthian capitals, and geometric decorations that echo the elegance of Pisa’s medieval style. Over the centuries the complex passed to several religious orders and suffered heavy damage during the Second World War and the 1949 flood, leading to major restoration. The church is also known for its leaning bell tower, which tilts even more dramatically than the famous Torre Pendente. Today, San Michele degli Scalzi offers a quiet encounter with Pisa’s layered history and enduring architectural beauty.
