The Mura di Pisa are among the oldest and best‑preserved medieval city walls in Italy, forming a remarkable defensive ring around the historic centre. Construction began in 1154 under Consul Cocco Griffi, prompted by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s arrival, and continued for more than a century. Built up to 11 metres high and nearly 2 metres thickComune di Pisa - Turismo, the walls were crafted from local stone, including limestone from San Giuliano and later the pink‑grey stone of Asciano. Originally stretching over six kilometresmuradipisa.it, they protected Pisa during its era as a powerful maritime republic. Today, restored sections allow visitors to walk along elevated pathways and enjoy sweeping views of the Cathedral, Baptistery, and Leaning Tower. The Mura di Pisa remain a rare example of a nearly intact medieval fortification, offering a unique perspective on the city’s past.
Pisa Italy
Mura di Pisa refers to the medieval city walls that encircle much of historic Pisa in the Tuscany region of central Italy, running mainly north of the River Arno and skirting the area around Piazza dei Miracoli. The most frequented access points to the elevated walkway are near the Torre Santa Maria behind the Camposanto and Baptistery, as well as at Piazza delle Gondole and close to the Arno, giving visitors views over the Leaning Tower, Pisa Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto Monumentale, gardens, church spires and the rooftops of the old town.
