Camposanto
The Camposanto Monumentale is one of the most atmospheric monuments on Pisa’s Piazza del Duomo, admired for its serene architecture and deep historical resonance. Founded in 1277 at the request of Archbishop Federico Visconti, it was designed as a dignified, enclosed resting place for the city’s burials. Legend says its central courtyard was filled with sacred soil brought from Golgotha during the Crusades, giving rise to the name “Holy Field”Comune di Pisa - Turismo. Inside, a graceful Gothic cloister surrounds ancient Roman sarcophagi and once‑vibrant fresco cycles depicting themes of life, death, and salvation, created by artists such as Francesco Traini and Bonamico Buffalmacco. Although a fire in the 20th century damaged parts of the decoration, extensive restoration has revived much of its beauty. Today, the Camposanto remains a quiet, contemplative space that reveals centuries of Pisan art, faith, and memory.

Camposanto Monumentale is located along the northern edge of Piazza dei Miracoli (Cathedral Square) in the historic city of Pisa, in the Tuscany region of central Italy. It forms part of the famous monumental complex that also includes Pisa Cathedral, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Baptistery, all set around a large green lawn. The cemetery stands just behind the Leaning Tower, within easy walking distance of the medieval city walls and the entrances that connect Piazza dei Miracoli with Pisa’s old town streets, shops and cafés.
