Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno is one of Pisa’s oldest and most atmospheric churches, standing on the southern bank of the Arno. Known locally as the Duomo Vecchio, it predates the cathedral and reflects the evolution of Pisan Romanesque architecture through centuries of rebuilding. Founded around the 10th–11th century, the church was linked to Benedictine and later Vallombrosan monks, becoming a major spiritual centre for the medieval city. Its façade, with blind arcades, marble inlays, and subtle asymmetries, echoes the style of the cathedral while preserving its own identity. Bombing in 1943 caused severe damage, but post‑war restoration returned the church to its serene, luminous form. Inside, the Latin‑cross plan and simple volumes highlight the building’s ancient origins and enduring devotional role.
