Porta a Lucca
Porta a Lucca is one of the historic gateways in Pisa’s medieval walls, opening toward the ancient road that once connected the city with Lucca. Created in the second half of the 16th century during Florentine rule, it replaced the prestigious Porta del Parlascio, which was sealed within a new bastion. The gate stands beside the archaeological remains of the Baths of Nero, adding a layer of Roman heritage to its Renaissance structurepisa.tours+1. Its sandstone framing, once richly detailed, has weathered over time, yet the arch still marks a symbolic threshold between the modern neighbourhood and the historic centre. The surrounding district, also called Porta a Lucca, grew into a lively residential area home to thousands of inhabitants and landmarks such as the Arena Garibaldi stadium. Today, the gate remains a quiet but meaningful reminder of Pisa’s shifting urban landscape and centuries of civic life.

Porta a Lucca is a historic city gate located on the northern side of Pisa, Tuscany, just east of the Piazza dei Miracoli and close to the Roman ruins known as the Baths of Nero. It stands along the line of the old city walls and gives its name to the surrounding Porta a Lucca residential district, which stretches north from the historic centre. Nearby are landmarks such as the Baths of Nero archaeological area, Piazza Santa Caterina, Piazza dei Cavalieri and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, all reachable on foot through pleasant streets lined with local shops, cafés and neighbourhood services.
