The Alcántara Bridge in Toledo is one of the city’s most enduring symbols, a majestic stone structure that has spanned the Tagus River since Roman times. Built in the 2nd century, it served as a crucial gateway to the city and a testament to Roman engineering, later restored by successive civilizations that valued its strategic importance. Its grand central arch, defensive towers, and inscriptions reflect the layers of history that shaped Toledo, from imperial Rome to the medieval kingdoms that followed. Crossing the bridge offers sweeping views of the river gorge and the fortified skyline, creating a dramatic introduction to the city’s historic core. More than a functional crossing, the Alcántara Bridge stands as a monument to resilience and continuity, inviting visitors to experience the same path travelled by soldiers, merchants, and pilgrims over nearly two millennia.
Toledo Spain
The Alcántara Bridge (Puente de Alcántara) is located over the Tagus River at the foot of the San Servando Castle, at the western edge of Toledo’s historic centre, just outside the old city walls. The bridge connects the old town with the San Servando hillside and lies close to the Puerta de Alcántara, one of the traditional gates into the city. Nearby you will find the Church of Santiago del Arrabal, several viewpoints over the river and the surrounding countryside, and easy access on foot to the Cathedral of Toledo, Plaza de Zocodover and other main monuments within the UNESCO‑listed centre.
