Puerta de Alfonso VI is one of Toledo’s most atmospheric medieval gateways, standing as a quiet reminder of the city’s layered past. Built during the Islamic period and originally known as Puerta de Jahara, it is the only surviving gate in Toledo with a true horseshoe arch, a hallmark of Andalusi architecture. Its name honours King Alfonso VI, who is said to have entered the city through this very passage during the Christian conquest in 1085. Unlike the more monumental Renaissance gates, Puerta de Alfonso VI retains a humble, almost intimate character, with weathered stone walls that reveal centuries of use. Today it offers a peaceful entrance into the historic centre, guiding visitors toward the old Jewish Quarter and inviting them to imagine the diverse cultures that once shaped Toledo’s identity.
Toledo Spain
The Puerta de Alfonso VI, also known as the Puerta Vieja de Bisagra (Old Bisagra Gate), is located in the northern part of Toledo’s old town, on Calle Alfonso VI, just west of the main Puerta Nueva de Bisagra (New Gate of Bisagra). It stands as the oldest surviving city gate, part of the medieval Arab wall, and marks one of the historical entrances to the walled city from the north side of the hill above the Tagus River gorge. Nearby, visitors can easily reach the imposing Puerta Nueva de Bisagra, the Alcázar of Toledo, and the northern stretches of the old city walls, with good views over the surrounding landscape. The gate is close to the historic centre, within walking distance of the Cathedral of Toledo, the Zocodover square, and the Jewish Quarter, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the main sights of the old town.
