Jacob van Artevelde is one of Ghent’s most influential historical figures, remembered as the statesman who guided the city through the political and economic turmoil of the fourteenth century. A skilled merchant and natural leader, he rose to prominence during the conflict between England and France, when Ghent’s thriving textile industry depended heavily on English wool. Van Artevelde successfully steered the city toward a neutral stance that protected its trade interests, earning him the title “the Wise Man of Ghent.” His leadership brought stability and prosperity, and his legacy is commemorated by the imposing statue on the Vrijdagmarkt, where he stands pointing toward England, symbolising the crucial alliance he forged. Although his life ended in political unrest, Jacob van Artevelde remains a powerful symbol of civic independence, economic foresight and the proud, self‑governing spirit that shaped medieval Ghent.

The statue of Jacob van Artevelde is located in the center of Vrijdagmarkt square in Ghent’s historic district, a bustling market area just east of the main medieval core. Erected in 1863, it depicts the 14th-century Flemish leader pointing toward England, symbolizing his role in Ghent’s rebellion against Count Louis de Nevers. Nearby, the square hosts weekly markets, flea markets, and the famous De Dulle Griet pub, while a short walk leads to Gravensteen Castle across the river, the Belfry and St Bavo’s Cathedral at Sint-Baafsplein, Veldstraat shopping street, Graslei and Korenlei waterfronts, and the Patershol neighborhood filled with cozy restaurants and galleries.
