Citadelpark is one of Ghent’s largest and most elegant green spaces, created in the late nineteenth century on the former site of a Dutch citadel. Its gently winding paths, leafy avenues and landscaped ponds offer a peaceful retreat from the city, while its elevated position provides subtle views across the surrounding neighbourhoods. The park is home to several cultural institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts and the S.M.A.K., which add an artistic dimension to its natural charm. Scattered throughout the grounds are statues, pavilions and remnants of the old fortifications, giving the park a layered historical character. Popular with joggers, families and students, Citadelpark blends tranquillity with everyday activity, making it a beloved urban oasis. Citadelpark is located on a hill between the rivers Scheldt and Lys in Ghent, midway between the central train station and the historic city center. This 19th-century English-style green space, once the site of a Dutch citadel, now features rare trees, ponds, playgrounds, and walking paths popular for picnics and dog walks. Nearby attractions include the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK), the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (SMAK), the STAM city museum, the Gent ICC convention center, the Botanical Garden, and easy tram or walking access to Gravensteen Castle, the Belfry, Graslei waterfront, and the medieval core with its cafes and shops.
