UGent’s Volkssterrenwacht Armand Pien is a welcoming gateway to astronomy in the heart of Ghent, offering visitors a chance to explore the universe through science, curiosity and hands‑on discovery. Named after the beloved Belgian weather presenter Armand Pien, the observatory continues his mission of making complex topics accessible and engaging. Housed within Ghent University, it combines educational outreach with research, hosting public lectures, themed evenings and guided observations that introduce guests to the night sky. Its telescopes allow visitors to view the Moon, planets and seasonal celestial objects, while exhibitions and demonstrations explain the fundamentals of meteorology, space science and atmospheric phenomena. UGent Volkssterrenwacht Armand Pien is located at Rozier 44 on the rooftop of the University of Ghent's Plateau campus in Ghent's city center, atop the historic Blandijnberg hill within the university complex near Jozef Plateaustraat and Gezusters Lovelingstraat. This 1907 Old Observatory features a 19th-century Van Monckhoven telescope dome, meridian room with vintage instruments, a weather station, and grassy terrace offering city views. Nearby, the Boekentoren library tower, Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth, STAM city museum, Sint-Pietersabdij abbey, Kunstencentrum Viernulvier, and Vooruit arts center surround the site, with quick access to Museum of Fine Arts (MSK), SMAK, Gravensteen Castle, Belfry, and Graslei waterfront in the medieval core.
