St. Catherine’s Church in Turku is one of Finland’s finest medieval stone churches, standing in the historic Nummi district where it has shaped local life for centuries. Its origins reach back to the 1340s, when construction began with the sacristy, later consecrated in 1351 by Bishops Hemming and Thomas of Växjö. Despite periods of destruction and rebuilding, including damage caused by the Victual Brothers, the church has preserved the essential form of a medieval Finnish parish church, with Gothic architecture that reflects the craftsmanship of its era. Originally known as Kaarina Church, it served the surrounding rural parish until the area became part of Turku in 1939, and it received its current name in 1991 in honour of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Today, the church remains an active parish and a treasured cultural landmark, admired for its serene atmosphere, enduring stone structure, and deep historical roots.
