Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is one of Turku’s most atmospheric heritage sites, a preserved wooden quarter that survived the Great Fire of 1827 and now offers an immersive journey into pre‑industrial urban life. The museum consists of original 18th‑ and early 19th‑century houses kept on their historic plots, their interiors restored to reflect the crafts and domestic routines of the era. Workshops once used by carpenters, potters, weavers and other artisans have been recreated with authentic tools and furnishings, many donated by master craftsmen. In summer, the lanes and courtyards come alive as artisans demonstrate traditional skills, giving visitors a vivid sense of the community that once thrived here. Opened in 1940 and later expanded, Luostarinmäki remains a rare, living fragment of old Turku, where time seems to pause and everyday history unfolds in its original surroundings.

Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is located in the heart of Turku at Vartiovuorenkatu 2, 20700 Turku, on the hillside above the Aura River between the city centre and the Old Town area. Nearby you can combine a visit with Turku Market Square and the Aura River promenade, Turku Castle a short walk along the river, Turku Cathedral and the Old Town, as well as the University of Turku’s main campus and the surrounding park‑like residential streets that make the museum feel like a historic neighbourhood within the city centre.
