Turku Castle

About

Turku Castle Museum is one of Finland’s most significant historic landmarks, rising on the banks of the Aura River as a powerful reminder of the country’s medieval past. Founded in the late 13th century, the castle grew over centuries into a formidable stronghold and administrative centre, later serving as a granary, prison, and finally a museum. Its thick stone walls, vaulted halls, and Renaissance‑era rooms reveal layers of political intrigue, royal visits, and everyday life within its fortifications. Today, visitors can wander through the Main Castle and the Bailey, exploring exhibitions that illuminate medieval culture, craftsmanship, and the evolution of the fortress itself. Highlights include richly restored state rooms, chapels, and atmospheric corridors that evoke the castle’s long and complex history. As one of Finland’s most visited museums, Turku Castle offers an immersive journey through time, blending architectural grandeur with compelling stories from the nation’s early centuries.
