Turku City Theatre is a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life, standing prominently on the banks of the Aura River as Finland’s oldest fully municipal theatre, founded in 1946. Its modernist building, opened in 1962 and later renovated, houses several stages that together host around 400 performances each year, ranging from major Finnish premieres to musicals, dramas, and visiting productions. As a repertoire theatre, it produces multiple premieres annually and attracts roughly 140,000 visitors, reflecting its central role in making the performing arts accessible to the public. The theatre’s mission emphasises local storytelling and artistic diversity, supported by a professional staff of around 150–200 people.
