Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, known as WAM, is Turku’s dedicated museum for modern and contemporary art, located on the east bank of the Aura River in a striking modernist building opened in 1967. The museum was established around the City of Turku’s significant collection of works by Wäinö Aaltonen, one of Finland’s most influential sculptors, whose donations helped form its foundation. Its light‑filled galleries, designed by Matti and Irma Aaltonen with input from the artist himself, provide spacious settings for sculpture, painting and graphic art. Alongside its permanent display of Aaltonen’s work, WAM hosts regularly changing exhibitions featuring Finnish and international artists, ensuring a dynamic and evolving programme. With its clean architectural lines, sculpture hall, museum shop and café, the museum offers an inviting cultural experience that highlights both Aaltonen’s legacy and the breadth of contemporary artistic expression in Turku.

The Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art is located at Itäinen Rantakatu 38, 20700 Turku, on the east bank of the Aura River in the city centre, about a ten‑minute walk along the river from Turku Market Square. Nearby you can combine a visit with the Aura River promenade, Turku Market Square and Market Hall, Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova a bit further south along the river, Turku Cathedral and the Old Town, as well as the Idrottsparken park and riverside green areas behind the museum that are popular for picnics and relaxation.
