Burning Conscience

About

Burning Conscience is one of the most thought‑provoking contemporary landmarks in Cēsis, created in 2005 as a memorial to the victims of totalitarian regimes. The sculpture, designed by artist Ģirts Burvis, stands in the historic Castle Park, where its stark, flame‑like form contrasts with the surrounding greenery. Made of corten steel, it slowly changes colour over time, symbolising how memory evolves yet never disappears. The monument’s concept is rooted in the idea of an inner fire that refuses to be extinguished—a reminder of moral responsibility and the courage to resist oppression. Its sharp, rising silhouette evokes both a burning torch and a wounded heart, inviting viewers to reflect on Latvia’s turbulent 20th‑century history. An interesting detail is that the sculpture was unveiled on June 14, the national day of remembrance for victims of Soviet deportations, giving it a powerful emotional resonance. Today, Burning Conscience serves as a quiet but compelling space for reflection, blending contemporary art with collective memory in the heart of Cēsis.

Location

Burning Conscience is a small historical exhibition in Cēsis, housed in a former Soviet detention facility just off Pils Street near Cēsis Castle Square in the old town. The exhibition focuses on the occupations of Latvia and tells powerful stories of local resistance to Soviet and Nazi regimes, using original cells, documents and personal testimonies to create a very intimate atmosphere. Stepping outside, you are only a few moments from the Cēsis Medieval Castle and the New Castle with the Cēsis History and Art Museum, making it easy to combine the exhibition with a broader exploration of the town’s past. Castle Park and the surrounding green areas provide quiet corners to reflect after the visit, while nearby streets lead to St John’s Church, Līvu Square and the cobbled lanes of the historic centre with cafés and small shops.
