Cēsis New Castle is a refined 18th‑century manor house that forms a graceful counterpoint to the dramatic medieval ruins beside it. Built around 1777 for the von Sievers family, it reflects the tastes of the Baltic German nobility, blending Classicist elegance with the romantic landscape of the surrounding park. Its pale façades, symmetrical layout, and decorative interiors marked a shift from fortress life to cultured estate living, symbolising a new era in Cēsis’ history. One of the castle’s most interesting features is the Lademaher Tower, which offers sweeping views over the old town and the medieval castle complex. Inside, visitors can explore restored period rooms, including salons, studies, and galleries that now house the Cēsis History and Art Museum. The building played an important role during Latvia’s national awakening, hosting intellectual gatherings and later serving administrative functions. Today, Cēsis New Castle stands as a bridge between eras—an elegant residence that preserves the spirit of the Enlightenment while anchoring one of Latvia’s most atmospheric heritage sites.
Cēsis Latvia
Cēsis New Castle stands in the centre of Cēsis, right beside the medieval castle ruins on Castle Square, forming part of the town’s main castle complex. Built in the 18th–19th century as a manor‑style residence, it later became home to the Cēsis History and Art Museum, where exhibitions present the region’s past, interiors of a Baltic‑German noble house and changing art displays. The castle’s Neo‑Gothic Lademaher Tower is one of the key landmarks of Cēsis and offers panoramic views over the old town and Castle Park. Stepping outside, you are only a few steps from the romantic ruins of Cēsis Medieval Castle, winding paths through Castle Park and the cobbled streets of the historic centre. Within a short walk lie St John’s Church, one of the oldest churches in Latvia, the Cēsis Exhibition Hall and smaller museums and galleries that showcase local culture. From the New Castle it is also easy to continue towards the cafés and restaurants of the old town or to head out into the nearby Gauja National Park, combining history, art and nature in a single visit.
