Cēsis St. John’s Church is one of the oldest and most impressive medieval churches in Latvia, a landmark that has shaped the town’s skyline since the early 13th century. Built by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, it originally served as the spiritual centre of their powerful stronghold. Its massive stone walls, tall Gothic windows, and soaring tower reflect centuries of architectural evolution, from Romanesque beginnings to later Gothic and Baroque influences. One of the church’s most interesting features is its collection of medieval tombstones, including those of prominent knights and local nobles. The interior also preserves rare fragments of medieval wall paintings and a beautifully carved pulpit from the 18th century. The tower, rebuilt several times after fires, now offers panoramic views over Cēsis and the surrounding landscape. Throughout its history, the church has witnessed battles, reformations, and cultural transformations, yet it remains an active place of worship and a symbol of the town’s enduring heritage.

Cēsis St. John’s Church stands in the very centre of Cēsis Old Town, on Lielā Skolas Street right by the main square and a short walk from the bus and train stations. Consecrated in the late 13th century, it is one of the oldest and largest medieval basilicas in Latvia, with a tall neo‑Gothic tower whose viewing platform offers wide panoramas over the red‑tiled roofs and surrounding hills. Inside, the church preserves historic tombstones, an impressive altarpiece and one of the most resonant concert organs in the country, so it serves both as a place of worship and as a venue for choir and organ concerts. Stepping outside, you are immediately among cobbled streets lined with cafés, small shops and craft stores, including local food and souvenir shops that sit almost next door to the church. Within a few minutes on foot you can reach Cēsis Medieval Castle and the New Castle with the History and Art Museum, as well as Castle Park with its ponds and walking paths. Nearby attractions also include the Cēsis Exhibition Hall and the Global Center for Latvian Art, making the church an ideal starting point for exploring both the spiritual and cultural heart of Cēsis.
