Nordic Nature Medicine Museum

About

The Nordic Nature Medicine Museum in Cēsis is a distinctive cultural and educational space dedicated to traditional healing practices, herbal knowledge, and the deep relationship between people and the northern landscape. Established in the early 21st century, the museum grew from a long‑standing local tradition of using forest plants, mosses, and minerals for wellness. Its founders aimed to preserve this knowledge at a time when natural medicine was being rediscovered across Latvia. Inside, visitors encounter displays of dried herbs, tinctures, and historical tools once used by healers, midwives, and herbalists. One of the museum’s most interesting features is its focus on the medicinal properties of Nordic flora—plants such as juniper, fireweed, and yarrow, which have been used for centuries in teas, balms, and remedies. Interactive exhibits allow guests to explore scents, textures, and preparation methods, creating a multisensory experience. The museum also hosts workshops on herbal crafting and seasonal foraging, keeping ancient knowledge alive in a modern context. Today, it stands as a bridge between folklore, science, and sustainable living.
