Pasaules latviešu mākslas centrs, the World Latvian Art Centre in Cēsis, is a unique cultural institution dedicated to preserving and celebrating the artistic legacy of Latvians living abroad. Established in the early 21st century, it grew from a long‑standing effort to gather works created by the Latvian diaspora—artists who fled war, occupation, or political upheaval yet continued to shape Latvian culture from afar. The centre’s mission is both archival and emotional: to reconnect these scattered creative voices with Latvia’s cultural landscape. Housed in a historic building in the heart of Cēsis, the centre hosts rotating exhibitions featuring painting, sculpture, graphics, and applied arts from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Sweden. One of its most interesting aspects is the diversity of styles represented, reflecting how Latvian identity evolved in different cultural environments. Many works were donated by families of artists who wished to return their heritage “home,” giving the collection a deeply personal dimension. Today, the centre stands as a bridge between Latvia and its global community, honouring creativity shaped by distance, memory, and resilience.
Cēsis Latvia
Pasaules latviešu mākslas centrs, also known as the Global Center for Latvian Art, is located in central Cēsis on Lielā Skolas Street, a short walk from the old town and castle complex. Housed in a historic school building, it focuses on art created by Latvians in exile and the contemporary diaspora, presenting changing exhibitions from its large collection of works gathered from around the world. The centre offers a calm, gallery‑like atmosphere where visitors can explore painting, sculpture and graphic art while learning about the stories of artists who lived outside Latvia. Events, talks and meetings with artists are regularly organised, making it a lively hub for cultural exchange in Cēsis. From the art centre it is only a few minutes on foot to the medieval old town with its narrow streets, cafés and small shops, as well as to Cēsis Medieval Castle and the New Castle with the History and Art Museum. Nearby you can also reach St John’s Church and, with a short onward trip, the forests and landscapes of Gauja National Park, allowing you to combine a visit to the centre with both cultural and nature experiences.
