Brno Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science

About

The Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science in Brno is a peaceful enclave of biodiversity, tucked just a short walk from the city centre. Founded in 1922, it originally served as a teaching garden, and one interesting fact is that several of its oldest trees were planted by the very first botany students of Masaryk University. Today, the garden blends scientific purpose with a calm, almost hidden‑garden atmosphere. Inside the outdoor grounds, visitors can explore themed sections ranging from alpine rockeries to medicinal plants and a small arboretum. The collection of carnivorous plants is a favourite highlight, showcasing species from delicate sundews to imposing pitcher plants. Seasonal displays—especially spring bulbs and autumn foliage—give the garden a changing character throughout the year. The greenhouses offer a journey through global climates. The tropical house features orchids, bromeliads, and towering palms, while the succulent house displays cacti and desert flora arranged in striking landscapes. Educational panels explain plant adaptations, making the visit both relaxing and informative.
