Mahen Theatre

About

Mahen Theatre is one of Brno’s most elegant cultural landmarks and a pioneer of European theatre technology. Opened in 1882, it became the first theatre on the continent illuminated entirely by electric light—thanks to a system designed with the involvement of Thomas Edison’s company. This innovation made Mahen Theatre a symbol of modernity at a time when most theatres still relied on gas lamps. Inside, the theatre impresses with a richly decorated Neo‑Renaissance interior. The grand auditorium, with its red‑and‑gold palette, crystal chandeliers, and ornate stucco, creates a warm, ceremonial atmosphere. The ceiling painting, inspired by classical mythology, adds a sense of timeless drama to the space. Visitors can also admire the historic foyer and elegant staircases that reflect the refined taste of Brno’s 19th‑century cultural elite. Today, Mahen Theatre is home to the drama ensemble of the National Theatre Brno, offering a varied programme from classical plays to contemporary productions. Its blend of historical charm and living artistic tradition makes it one of the city’s most captivating venues.

Location

The Mahen Theatre is one of Brno’s most important cultural landmarks, located on Malinovského náměstí (Malinovský Square) in the city centre, just a 5‑minute walk from Brno’s main train station. Opened in 1882, it is one of the oldest professional theatres in the Czech Republic and is famous for being the first public building in Europe to be fully lit by electric light, a pioneering achievement by Thomas Edison’s team. The building has a Neo‑Renaissance façade and a richly decorated Neo‑Baroque interior, with performances ranging from opera and ballet to drama and musicals as part of the Brno Travelling Theatre. Nearby attractions include the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and the Augustinian Abbey at Mendel Square, where Gregor Mendel lived and worked, as well as the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and HaDivadlo, an alternative theatre venue. The historic Zelný trh (Vegetable Market) with its Parnas Fountain is a short walk away, as is the New Town Hall and the Church of St. John. Also within easy reach are the Diocesan Museum, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, Špilberk Castle, and the Old Town Hall, making the Mahen Theatre an ideal starting point for a cultural walking tour of Brno’s historic and architectural highlights.
