Villa Tugendhat

About

Villa Tugendhat in Brno is one of the most iconic modernist buildings in the world, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1930. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of functionalist architecture. One fascinating fact is that the villa introduced groundbreaking technologies for its time, including a system that allowed entire glass walls to retract into the floor, creating an uninterrupted flow between interior and garden. Inside, the villa reveals Mies’s philosophy of open space, clean lines and luxurious materials. The famous onyx wall, which glows warmly when hit by afternoon sunlight, is one of the most striking features. The main living area is furnished with original or faithfully recreated pieces, including the iconic Tugendhat and Brno chairs designed specifically for the house. Visitors can also explore the private rooms, terraces and the technical floor, where advanced air‑conditioning and structural systems demonstrated engineering far ahead of their era.

Location

Villa Tugendhat is a landmark of modern architecture located in the Černá Pole district, a quiet residential hillside area just northeast of Brno’s city center. Built between 1928 and 1930 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat, it’s the only modernist building in the Czech Republic on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The villa is famous for its open floor plan, onyx wall, steel-frame construction, and floor-to-ceiling glass that frames views of Brno’s skyline. The villa is only a 15-minute walk from the city center. Head downhill and you’ll reach Lužánky Park, Brno’s oldest public park with ponds, sculptures, and a summer villa. From there, continue to the Cabbage Market and Old Town, home to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill with its Gothic towers and city views. A short walk west takes you to Špilberk Castle, the massive fortress overlooking Brno that now houses the city museum and casemates. If you go south from the villa, you’ll hit Moravian Square and the Mahen Theatre area, full of cafés and Art Nouveau buildings. The area around Černá Pole itself is known for elegant interwar villas and tree-lined streets, making it a great neighborhood to wander after your tour.
